ADOPT
Please understand that bringing home a new pet is a commitment and responsibility for the life of the pet (possibly 10+ years) that is not to be made lightly or impulsively.
Here are some things to consider before bringing home a new pet:

-
Why do you want to bring home a pet - Please carefully consider why you want to bring home a pet. Many times we hear, "I want to teach my child responsibility" or "this pet is a gift." Please keep in mind that a pet is a living being that has needs beyond love and affection such as exercise and training. Petting and playtime are easy, but the recipient may not be ready or even want to take on these other types of responsibilities. Please be fair to the pet... The pet doesn't understand any of your reasoning.

-
Your family - Does everyone in the household want a pet? Does anyone have any allergies? When a new pet comes into a home, there is no "his/her/your/my/their pet." There is only "our pet." It is very important that everyone in the household is onboard with bringing in a new family member, and that rules/boundaries are consistently applied.

-
Your financial situation - Among other things, pets require food, supplies, medical care, etc. These can be costly, so evaluate your options and situation carefully. Many veterinarians offer pet care plans (pre-packaged services that are paid for over time, typically 1 year) and some employers now offer discounts on pet insurance.

-
Your energy level/time commitment - Please be honest about the level of activity, leadership, and near/long-term time commitment you can provide. If you are not an active person, consider a low-energy pet. Behavioral issues such as nuisance barking, destructive chewing, and anxiety can occur when a pet's exercise and mental stimulation requirements aren't met. If you are expecting a major life event (e.g., called back to the office, work relocation, or having a baby), please be sure that your pet fits into these plans. Many pets in shelters and rescues have been surrendered because owners no longer had time for their pets for these reasons.
